About us

Recovery Self Help Method Ireland is a registered Irish charity, registration number CHY 7690.

The organisation was established in Ireland in 1971. We are the Irish division of Recovery International, which was founded in 1937 in Chicago, US.

Over the years Recovery Self Help Method Ireland has been known by a number of trade names including; Recovery Inc, Recovery International Ireland, and Abraham Low Self Help Systems.

The organisation is part-financed by a grant from the HSE and part-funded by voluntary donations from our members.


Recovery Self Help Method Ireland operates under a license agreement from its parent organisation Recovery International, based in Chicago, US.

In Ireland, the organisation is governed by a Board of directors, who are responsible under company law for its affairs.

The Board of Directors is nominated and voted in post by the seven original company subscribers as set out in the Memorandum & Articles of Association. [Click link]

The present directors are;

Charles Kelly - Director (incoming)

Principal Role: All Ireland Group Area Leader

Charles joined Recovery in 2010. He is currently the leader of the Rathgar Recovery group. In May 2017, Charles was elected by the group leaders in Ireland, to serve as their representative and liaison. Charles can be contacted via email below.



Dermod Grennan - Director 

Principal role:  Company secretary

Currently he leads the Drumcondra group meeting.


Brendan Minnock - Director 

Principal role: Directors

Brendan is a former leader of the Killester Recovery Group. Brendan is the former Group Area leader. He resigned from this role August 2018.


Rosaleen Fitzpatrick - Director 

Principal role: Treasurer (outgoing)

Rosaleen was a treasurer for Recovery. She resigned this role in 2017.

Joe Strain - Director

Joe joined Recovery in 19.. and over the years has served on the Executive committee and Board of directors.

Group Leaders

The services of the organisation are delivered by trained and highly experienced volunteers, known as Group Leaders. The Group Leaders generously give up their free time, 50 weeks of each year often for many years to help train members in this proven method of self-help for poor mental health.

We contract a part-time external administrator who manages phone calls and emails remotely, as well as attending to post etc. a half day per week.
